For many men, it is a relief to know that something is NOT “wrong with them” as many have believed, rather that they experience life in a more intense way for a reason. Finding application for that reason is often the challenge and the life’s journey for many men as they learn more about the trait and how to adapt their lives to their unique needs.

San Francisco, CA – July 2, 2023 – Science has unquestionably established 20-30% of all men and women–equal numbers–are born highly sensitive to their environment. Yet, 25 years after

the first published scientific articles on this trait, sensitive men are mostly still in hiding, still struggling with this fact. Now these men are brought into the light with a groundbreaking documentary Sensitive Men Rising.

We especially wish to announce the Gala Premiere Screening on July 16, 2023, at 1:00 PM, in the iconic Hibernia Bank, 1 Jones St., in the heart of beautiful San Francisco.

The film features luminaries and trailblazers who help us see the profound potential impact of highly sensitive men on modern masculinity and leadership.

This is a not-for-profit event with proceeds to benefit Glide Memorial Church and the Foundation for the Study of Highly Sensitive Persons.

The experiences of men of color are imbued with layers of implicit and explicit expectations of misogyny, anger, and bravado rooted in a performative masculinity in which, at any moment, one might be found to be less than measuring up to those expectations, often with harsh repercussions.

Adding on being highly sensitive and being a man of color represents an additional layering of complexity and necessity to ‘mask’ their authentic selves for fear of attack – real or potential. Sensitive Men Rising-The Documentary is a radically inclusive film meant to tackle the way many highly sensitive men ‘mask up’ for fear of being viewed as less manly, less capable, less, less, less…

This illuminating interview with NPR’s Rodney Carmichael takes us to another generation of men of color while touching on many aspects I think you’ll relate to quite well as sensitive men, sensitive fathers, and sensitive citizens of the world!

Sensitive Men Rising filming Wednesday in South Carolina with a mother’s story of loss, healing, and, ultimately, passionate advocacy for mental wellness, reducing suffering, and destigmatizing mental health. Susan Crooks is the founder of the grassroots non-profit Walt’s Waltz, named for her son Walt, who was tragically lost to suicide in 2019.

Anxiety has been ever-present in my life and seems to drive many of the people I have consulted with over the years, but one of the ways I have found that is useful to think about anxiety is as a sort of fuel to help us push through our fears.

As an example, even after years of giving interviews and podcasts, I still feel a moderate amount of anxiety leading up to the event. I’ve come to think of that as natural for me and useful in the sense of alerting me to focus on preparation. As the event draws near, the anxiety usually settles a bit, but I know from my own experiences, that if I can just get through the first few minutes, I’ll be off and running!

Thankfully, most interviewers are kind people and are good at helping speakers ease into the format of public speaking. Once past the initial anxieties, none of them based in any real deficiencies, I find that it is much easier to access my depth and breadth of experience to give a great interview.

For those of us who are low-key anxious people, it is good practice to think of our anxieties as a fuel to help us break through the walls of fear, of the unknown, or that result from perceived inadequacies earlier in our lives.

Yes, even high-functioning people experience anxiety. The key is how we choose to use that anxiety to either limit our growth or to enhance a growth mindset.
